Tips on memorising the Qur’an

Assalamualaikum! hi! This is a sharing from Sahrawia

These are general tips that have truly helped me, and of course is still helping me as I’m still memorising surahs from the Qur’an. Inshallah this will benefit you in some way and will help you to memorise the Qur’an too!
  1. Don’t pressure yourself. Take your time in memorising the Qur’an, there is no need to have a time frame to complete your goal. Do things at your own pace within your own free time.
  2. You don’t need to be technical. Please don’t feel like you need to memorise the Qur’an in a systematical or methodical way; it’s not necessary. You don’t have to start from the beginning or memorise surahs by Juz’. Instead, think of what you want to learn from the Qur’an. Do you want to learn about what Allah talks about women? Go to surah Al-Nisaa. Do you want to learn about the Prophet Yousef (as)? Go to surah Yousef etc.
  3. Memorise the surah by learning the meaning of the surah. Not only will it help you to memorise because you will understand what Allah is saying so the flow of it will come easy for you, but because you will learn what the surah is talking about. How to do this is to not only read the translation but the tafsir also. Whatever sect/school of thought you follow, find the tafsir that adheres to it and you can make notes too if that helps.
  4. Listen to your favourite reciter when reciting/memorising/reading the Qur’an. Following along with their voice will help with pronunciation and of course it will help to make the ayahs stick to your head. That way when you’re memorising, the voice of the reciter will help with the flow of the words and it will be less likely that you make mistakes compared to when you read it on your own.
  5. Going back to taking notes, if that’s what you think will benefit you, get a notebook which you can jot down what you learned from the tafsir. You can be decorative with it using different colours etc. if that’s your thing!
  6. Remember that every single letter that you recite from the Qur’an, Allah will reward you with it so have sabr! Don’t feel put down because you can’t say the words correctly or that you feel you’re being a little slow - Allah will reward you even more for these efforts! Qur’an doesn’t have to be a competition, it’s for you to learn from so you can improve your connection with Allah and the message He is conveying through these ayahs. It is for you and you only, don’t feel like you have to prove yourself to anybody.
Inshallah these tips are somewhat helpful and not lame lol may Allah make it easy for all of us and that we can reach our goals whatever they may be!!
